Afghanistan's women still suffer threat of family murder

Family members are often the perpetrators of the murders of women they believe have 'shamed' the family

So-called 'honour killings' became culturally engrained in Afghanistan during the Taliban's hard-lined, punitive, conservative rule from 1996 to late 2001.
The entrenched belief is that girls and women bring shame upon their family if they do not marry a man chosen for them by their parents.
Often, girls are married off before they have reached

Afghan woman’s family ‘behead her and her lover and dump their bodies in graveyard in horrific honour killing’

A young couple in conservative southern Afghanistan have been found beheaded, apparently killed for having a love affair outside of marriage, officials said Wednesday.
Police investigating the case said they believed the family of the woman, aged around 20, was responsible for the murders in the southern province of Helmand, a lawless hotbed of the Taliban insurgency.
The elder brother of the male victim, who was in his 20s, told officers the woman had run away with him recently and was living in their family home.

On Monday, 10 men broke into the house near the provincial capital Lashkar Gah and kidnapped the pair, police official Mohammad Ismail Hotak told AFP.

YES! Kudos to the Turkish woman who beheaded her rapist for honor

A woman who killed a man that allegedly raped and impregnated her, then rolled his decapitated head in front of a coffeehouse in a village in Isparta province, has said she did what she did to protect her honor. “At least, now, my children will be able say they are the children of a woman who cleaned her honor,” admitted Nevin Yildirim.

Cevirman (H/T Susan K)  Isparta – Nevin Yildirim was raped at gunpoint and left pregnant by N.G. and subsequently killed him with a hunting rifle, decapitated him and threw his head in the village square.  Stating that she didn’t want to give birth to the five month old baby in her belly, Nevin said, “Come what may, an abortion should be done. I am ready to die.”

Nevin, a 26 year old mother of two, was raped at gunpoint and left pregnant by N.G., a 35 year old father of two. Last Tuesday at 10 PM, she killed him with a hunting rifle, and then decapitated him with a knife and put his head in a sack. Shouting, “This is the head of the man who played with my honor,” she threw it head into the village square. Afterwards, she was taken into custody by the gendarmerie and was referred to the court system yesterday.

Using her right to remain silent while in the custody of the gendarmerie, Nevin explained in her statement to the court that her husband works in Antalya, which is why she remained in the village with their two and six year old children. She said that five months ago, N.G. came to their house one night and raped her at gunpoint. Taking naked pictures of her, N.G. continued to rape her using threats and blackmail. Nevin explained that N.G. raped her repeatedly, and she was afraid she couldn’t explain what was happening to anybody.

Afghan Muslim husband ‘halal’ slaughters his wife just as he would slaughter an animal

Randjida Khairi paid the ultimate price for standing up to her Afghan Muslim husband and letting their children live as Westerners. The mother of six had her throat, neck muscles, airway and voicebox slashed open to the spine by husband, Peer Khairi, causing her to slowly suffocate in her own blood. He also stabbed her five times in the torso with a second, shorter sharp-pointed knife.

Toronto Sun  (H/T Maria J) “She was in the process of separating her finances and moving out of the family home,” Kenny said. “There had been fights between the couple about how permissive she was in raising their children, how she allowed them to dress and socialize as they liked, rather than asserting more control over their behaviour so that they kept the culture and rules of their birthplace.”

Khairi, now 65, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the March 18, 2008 slaying of Randjida, 53, his wife of more than 30 years, at their West Mall penthouse apartment. But Peer Khairi will admit that he inflicted the fatal injuries, Kenny said. “What is at issue is how the death happened and what was going through the accused’s mind when it happened.

“The Crown’s position is that the evidence will show the accused intended to murder his wife,” Kenny told the jury.

The couple were alone in the apartment for hours before the fatal attack and an hour afterwards, the accused phoned 911 and stated his wife had been murdered. Police found an immaculately tidy apartment — with no signs of a struggle or conflict — but the deceased lying in a pool of her own blood. Khairi later blamed officers for not doing enough to try to save his wife.

“Khairi told homicide detectives that he couldn’t take it any more,” Kenny said. He said he “felt disrespected, how he claims to be wronged by his children, how his wife took the children’s side and turned against him,” Kenny said.

Randjida spoke to “various people, some complete strangers about her plans to leave her husband and why she wanted to be separated from him.” Less than two weeks before her demise, Randjida approached a stranger named Nida Ali to seek help exiting her unhappy home, Kenny said.

HONOR KILLINGS RISE AS MUSLIM IMMIGRATION INCREASES

Three foreign maids in one week hang themselves because of employer abuse in Saudi Arabia

Three housemaids committed a suicide by hanging themselves at their employers’ houses in the Saudi capital Riyadh in less than a week. Two Ethiopian maids were found hanged by the ceiling fan at home while an Indonesian was found with her neck tied to the window.

“Police are still investigating these separate suicide cases which took place in Riyadh in just six days,” Kabar newspaper said. Scores of Asian and African domestic workers have been reported to have committed a suicide in Saudi Arabia over the past years because of mistreatment and other factors. Other maids were involved in murdering or injuring their employers.

Saudi Arabia, the world’s top oil exporter, is the largest Arab base for foreign domestic workers, with hundreds of thousands of maids from Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and other countries working in the Gulf Kingdom of nearly 28 million people.

Occasionally, the abused maid gets revenge: Maid mixes employers’ food with menstrual blood

Testimonies from foreign domestic workers confirm their virtual slavery at the hands of employers in Saudi Arabia, a senior Philippine politician has said following a fact-finding mission to the kingdom.

“A working day of 18 to 22 hours, constant threat of sexual abuse from employers the women called ‘maniacs’, and beatings, sometimes with the use of hot irons, by the wives of employers.” Rep. Walden Bello also said some Filipinos were being forced to sign a second contract upon arrival in Saudi Arabia with a salary significantly below the Philippine-government mandated minimum wage of 1,500 riyals ($400) per month, Arab News reported.

Bello said the Philippine Overseas Labour Offices (POLO) had rescued “scores” of Filipino women from oppressive employers, Arab News reported, adding that most of those in the shelters were victims of violence and sexual abuse. The lawmaker’s comments come at a time when the treatment of domestic workers is under close scrutiny in Saudi Arabia following numerous cases of alleged abuse.

In the most high-profile case, 23-year-old Indonesian Sumiati Binti Salan Mustapa suffered stab wounds, burns to her scalp and broken bones at the hands of her female employer. Gruesome images of Sumiati lying in a Medina hospital bed made the front pages of newspapers and led television newscasts in Indonesia, sparking public anger and causing a diplomatic spat between the two countries.

A Saudi court last week sentenced a woman to three years in prison for stabbing, beating and burning Sumiati, according to local newspapers.  Human rights groups have long said domestic workers face physical and financial abuse in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states due to inadequate labour laws.

UK ‘Dispatches’ went under cover in Saudi Arabia to reveal the brutal reality of life for thousands of immigrant workers. A British crew follows Jessica, a young Filipino woman, who travels to Saudi Arabia as a contract worker as she moves from family to family, is raped, beaten, and forced to change her religion.

Pakistani Muslim teenager whose brother tried to hack her to death with an axe in an attempted ‘honor’ killing, miraculously survives, but has a bleak future

At a women’s shelter in Kabul, Afghanistan, is Gul Meena, a 17-year-old girl from Pakistan who shouldn’t be alive. This Pakistani girl’s life of misery and suffering began at the tender age of 12, when instead of going to school she was married to a man old enough to be her grandfather. She says: “My family married me off when I was 12. My husband was 60. Every day he would beat me. I would cry and beg him stop. But he just kept on beating me.”

When Gul told her family what was happening, they responded in a way that shocked her. “My family would hit me when I complained. They told me you belong in your husband’s house — that is your life.”

After five years of abuse, Gul Meena met a young Afghan man and finally gathered the courage to leave her husband in Pakistan. In November 2012 she packed up some belongings and they made their way across the border into Afghanistan to the city of Jalalabad.

Days later her older brother tracked them down. Armed with an ax, he hacked to death Gul Meena’s friend, and then struck his own sister 15 times — cutting open her face, head and parts of her body. Assuming she was dead, her brother escaped back to Pakistan. Authorities are yet to catch him, but his family denies that he tried to kill Gul.

Hearing the commotion, a passer-by discovered Gul Meena lying in a pool of blood in her bed, and rushed her to the Emergency Department of Nangarhar Regional Medical Centre. With part of her brain hanging out of her skull, neurosurgeon Zamiruddin Khalid held out little hope that the girl on his operating table would survive.

She did, but Gul’s troubles were far from over. While she’d received life-saving treatment from the doctors and staff at the hospital, she had no one to care for her on the outside. Gul had been disowned by her family and despite the government and authorities knowing that she was alive and receiving care at the hospital, they wanted nothing to do with her due to the stigma and circumstances surrounding her attack.

Gul Meena is one of thousands of Muslim women living in shelters across Afghanistan — many of them victims of attempted honor killings. Tragically this practice still exists in a number of Islamic cultures.

News Islamic community angry at Muslim actress Sila Sahin posing naked in Playboy

But Sila Sahin, who has been branded a "whore" and a "western slut" after appearing on the cover of the German edition of the men's porn magazine Playboy, is unrepentant.

"For years I subordinated myself to various societal constraints. The Playboy photo shoot was a total act of liberation."

British Muslim who entered Miss Universe contest receives death threat from Islamic fundamentalists.....

Shanna Bukhari was subjected to a tide of online hate after entering the British heats of the beauty contest. Now she fears her life could be in danger

When Shanna Bukhari decided she wanted to be the first Muslim to represent Britain in a global beauty pageant, she suspected the road ahead might not be smooth, but nothing could have prepared her for the abuse she received.

"I have felt in fear for my life," said the 24-year-old Miss Universe contestant. The attacks escalated last week when Bukhari received her first death threat.
The censure has come from various quarters, ranging from Muslims who claim that she is denigrating the name of Islam, to white supremacists who say that an Asian cannot represent the UK, and to women who condemn beauty pageants as an affront to feminism.

Can you imagine trying to murder this woman because of this photo? Islamic supremacist rage and death threats come to Canada -- but remember, it's only "hate" if you disapprove of the Muslim intimidation and thuggery. "Controversial conversation continues due to cultural art," by Taylor Rocca for The Omega, April 11:

Unfamiliar pill bottles have become all too familiar to Sooraya Graham. Anti-depressants and anxiety medication have found a home in her life where they were previously unwelcome and unneeded.

Muslims bury 16years old girl alive in honor killing

A manual of Islamic law certified as a reliable guide to Sunni orthodoxy by Al-Azhar University, the most respected authority in Sunni Islam, says that "retaliation is obligatory against anyone who kills a human being purely intentionally and without right." However, "not subject to retaliation" is "a father or mother (or their fathers or mothers) for killing their offspring, or offspring's offspring." ('Umdat al-Salik o1.1-2). In other words, someone who kills his child incurs no legal penalty under Islamic law.
